The New York Times has an article about sleep in other animals, and the possible evolutionary purposes of sleep, provoked by a researcher's hypothesis that sleep evolved as a way to allow neurons to recover from a hard day of learning. On a more academic note, Nature has a number of free access articles on aspects of sleep.
