Several studies have shown that walking can improve cognitive function in older adults. While cognitive benefits weren't studied, it's intriguing to note a recent study that has found that walking on a cobblestone surface can significantly reduce blood pressure and improve balance and physical performance among adults 60 and over. Apparently cobblestone-like paths are common in China, and anecdotal evidence indicates a number of health benefits of cobblestone walking (e.g., pain relief, sleep enhancement, improved physical and mental well-being). This is the first controlled study to scientifically evaluate the case. The cobblestone walkers were compared to conventional walkers, and both walked one hour, three times a week for 16 weeks.
