Scientific American have an article about the much much higher proportion of people with perfect pitch among Mandarin speakers (whose language is, of course, tonal). Although the researchers throw in the expected caveat that, as the Mandarin speakers in the study were all ethnically Chinese, they cannot rule out a genetic basis for this difference, it seems likely that the difference is rooted in early experience. One more piece for the growing pile of evidence that much of what we see as "talent" is not so much innate as induced.
